We notice: The manual has a date which is May 3, 1942. Also, some words are bolded. It has a location on it: San Francisco, CA. Finally, this letter has instructions for people with Japanese ancestors. We wonder: Is this related to World War II? Why is this only regarding Japanese people/people with Japanese ancestors? What do the non-bolded words say? What are the instructions about?

We noticed that, the words beneath "Living in the Following area" are blurry, that this poster has the date May 3, 1942 at the top, that the instructions are made for people with Japanese ancestry, that it says "western defense command and fourth army wartime civil control administration" at the top, that this letter is telling Japanese people living in a certain area must go to the Civil Central at a certain time. We can not read the rest. We wonder, what the article says, what this is about, if it relates to refugee camps and who wrote this. We learned that after Pearl Harbor, many Japanese and asian people were put in camps because people thought they would do something terrible to the country since Japanese people bombed Pearl Harbor. Many Japanese people also served in world war 2. When they were released from the camps, all their belongings at home were gone. Many people became homeless. 40 years later, Ronald Reagan signed the Civil liberties act which helped the Japanese people rebuild their lives.

I notice that the letter is old because the date reads May 3, 1942. I also noticed that 1942 is one of the years including World War 2. I am wondering if this letter has anything to do with World War 2 because during 1942, World War 2 was still going on. Also the letter says something about "Wartime Civil Control" which might be a clue.

I noticed that the word Japanese is in the largest font size. I also noticed that the words,"Instructions to all persons of Japanese ancestry" seems like it is the headline of the article. I also noticed that it happened during May, 1942 in San Francisco. I wonder why it says,"Western Defense Command And Fourth Army Wartime Civil Control Administration" I wonder if it was a message to Japanese people because of World War 2 between US and Japan. I learned that Pearl Harbor attack happened just 3 months before. The Japanese-Americans were sent to camps until after the war. 2/3 of the Japanese americans were born in the US before the war even started.

We notice that the words Japanese are in big bold letters. The message mentions the fourth army wartime. We also notice it took place on May 3, 1942. It also says something about civil. We wonder if this message is to tell people to join the army. What areas do the message apply to? What are they instructions for? What is the purpose of the locations and times stated at the bottom of the message? After watching the video and reading the article we learned that this was about the Pearl Harbor attack of World War ll. Japanese-Americans were kept in isolated camps because Franklin D. Roosevelt thought they were there to sabotage the war effort. He believed this while some of them were born in America. Even the children were sent to the camps. They were kept inside barbed wired and were always watched. In the isolated camps they built a community with newspapers, schools, churches, and farms. Many Japanese-American men joined the army.

We learned that the picture is about the result of the bombing of Pearl Harbor during World War ll. The letter was for Japanese American people from the westcoast who had to go to camps, that were under surveillance. Some of the Japanese men from the camps, joined the army to fight in the war. This was until Ronald Reagan signed a bill in 1988. The bill stated that the evacuees could go back to the west coast. Unfortunately, when they went back, their houses and valuables, where looted.
