Today I had a great day and it had fun, learning, and critical thinking. It was filled with a lot of good activities throughout the day. From doing the sixty-second sweep to the star reading test I tell you what we did for the day.
When we got back from morning recess we each got in a circle and paired with someone that was next to us. Mrs. Citizen let us pick a topic, a swarm of ideas came rushing out of our mouths. We all decided on one topic which was dinner. We talked about our favorite food, resturants, and what we could make for dinner. The next theme we talked about was sports. The person who listened last time got to go first. People were saying baseball, Basketball, Soccer, and football left and right. We each learned new things about people in our class.
Once we took our things and entered the classroom we individually grabbed our chromebooks. Mrs. Citizen told us to get on Front Row and work for a little bit. Every time we work on Front Row we have to start with math fluency, so that's what we did. The next thing we had to do after math fluency was base 10. We all answered a lot of questions based on rounding, adding, multiplying, ect.
After Front Row Mrs. Citizen passed out a piece of paper to all of us. She had us to read the front side of the paper. We read the paper wondering what it would be. We all understood what the paper was about once we were finished reading. It was about the Hawk Article and how it would look like if you did it. The paper showed an intro to the article and what should be included in it. It gave us sequence words and phrases to help us with our transitions. There is also a checklist just to make sure you didn't forget anything.
When the Hawk article discussion was finished we each received a composition book and a label. Mrs. Citizen said “Glue it on your book and write your name”. We had to write a table of contents first before anything else so we know where things are. On the first page we made a circle map about verbs. On the second page we made a circle map about nouns. And on the third page we made a circle map about adjectives. We wrote in each map things that fit that topic. After each map we did we got in a group and shared out loud. We added anything that we never thought about or never got to write in a different color.
When we finished writing in our composition book we were given a page about us. We first had to watch an informational video about what we were going to do. The video stopped and we went straight to work. The sheet was just a brainstorming paper on what we were really gonna do. It was about us and getting to know us more. We had to draw some pictures of ourselves and give some description about us. For example: what our favorite subject is, an ability of ours, and something we like to do.
Once the 10:30 bell rang we lined up outside waiting for Mrs.Citizen to come lead us out. Every student in 5th and 4th grade were out there playing a variety of games like punch ball, or 4 square, or even basketball. Everyone was having fun and smiling until the end bell rang. Everyone had to stop what they were doing and return the ball if they had one. They all had to line up and wait for their teacher to take them back to the class.
When we came back we pulled out a piece of paper called the sixty-second sweep. The sixty-second sweep is where you get 60 second to try and find the expression of a number but it has to be from 2 - 9. The time began and we were writing with our pencils so fast that you can hear a water droplet like noise that bounced around the room. When 60 seconds was over we counted how many we had and that was our total answer.
After the sixty-second sweep, we grabbed our writing journals and colored pencils to line up outside. Mrs. Citizen told us to go to the oak tree. We arrived at the oak tree and sat down where ever you want. We had to sketch whatever stood out to us in the school area. When our sketch was done we wrote about the drawing.
When we came in from sketching we started reading. We could read any book that was in the class in any spot in the class. Some people read under tables, in the mini library, or even just on the floor. We did this quietly for 30 minutes reading a good book of our choosing.
Once we stopped reading we had to get a folder, paper, and a label. We glued the label to folder then wrote our name on it. We filled out what book we read on the paper and wrote the date. We slid the paper back in the folder and kept it at our desks.
Once we finished writing down information about our book we took out our chromebook and signed into renaissance learning. We took the star reading test. It had questions to find the correct grammar and finding the main idea. The test is for the teachers to see how good your reading skill is and how much you need to improve
When we finished our test we took our lunch boxes and walked them over to the cafeteria with the bin. We walked down the hall out to recess to go play. The end bell rang and we got lined up. The proctors excused us to go to eat our lunches. Mrs. Citizen took us to class after we were finished with our meals.
As soon as we got back to class we were put into 3 groups. In those groups we had to write about Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. We knew what to write about because we received our flow map of that day. We each typed up a paragraph of an event that occurred that day.
When our group assignment was over we lined up for P.E. At the beginning of P.E. we did a couple warm ups like trunk twisters and lunges. The teachers told us to run 2 laps around the field before we started our activities. We ran around the field 2 times our heart racing at the end. We did a drill for passing and dribbling. When we finished we lined up with our teacher and went back to the classroom.
It was 2:30 the end of school bell was about to ring. We wrote in our agendas what our homework was. It was 2:35 the end of school bell rang. Everyone came rushing out the doors of the school trying to get where they're supposed to be.
After all today was filled with excitement and work. We had gotten a lot a of things done and a few things started. I think this was one of the best days of the week.
